County Seat

Ein County Seat ist Hauptort und Verwaltungssitz eines Countys in den USA. Ein County Seat hat gewöhnlich auch einen County Court (entspricht dem Bezirksgericht).

In Großbritannien und Irland wird der Begriff County Town verwendet.

Besonderheiten in den einzelnen US-Staaten

  • In Virginia sind die County Seats manchmal nicht Teile des Countys, da nach dem örtlichen Recht alle größeren Städte unabhängig sind.
  • In New York City existieren fünf Countys: New York County (Manhattan), Kings County (Brooklyn), Bronx County (The Bronx), Queens County (Queens) und Richmond County (Staten Island).
  • In einigen Staaten Neuenglands wie Connecticut, Massachusetts und Rhode Island sind die Countys nur geographische Bezeichnungen, haben aber keine politischen Befugnisse. Entweder werden die Gemeinden selbst oder die Verwaltung des jeweiligen Bundesstaates tätig.
  • In Kalifornien hat San Francisco neben der städtischen Verwaltung auch eine County-Verwaltung und neben der städtischen Polizei ist auch ein County-Sheriff im Amt.
  • In Louisiana wird statt County der Begriff Parish verwendet. Der County Seat wird daher auch als Parish Seat bezeichnet.
  • In Alaska wird der Name Borough Seat verwendet.
  • In Vermont heißt der County Seat Shire Town.
