Im Eröffnungssong des Albums, „Hurricane“, besingt Dylan die Geschichte von einem seiner Meinung nach zu unrecht inhaftierten schwarzen Boxer namens Rubin Carter. Dieser wurde beschuldigt, 1966 einen dreifachen Mord begangen zu haben und entging in einem Indizienprozess nur knapp der Todesstrafe. Carter erhielt lebenslänglich. Sein in der Haft geschriebenes Buch The 16th round schickte er 1975 Dylan, der es zum Anlass nahm, ihn im Gefängnis zu besuchen, wonach dieser Song entstand [1]. Mit Hilfe der Rolling Thunder Revue und dem Abschlusskonzert im Madison Square Garden in New York City half er, Millionen Amerikanern diesen Justizfall überhaupt bekannt zu machen. Gemeinsam mit Muhammad Ali sprach Dylan zu dem Boxer in einem Live-Telefonat während des letzten Revuekonzerts [2]. Rubin Carter wurde erst 1985 nach Wiederaufnahme des Verfahrens freigelassen und ist in einem gleichnamigen Film wie der Song, Hurricane, gespielt von Denzel Washington, verewigt.

Mit Oh Sister (einer mystischen Auseinandersetzung mit sich, dem Tod und Gott) und Joey (hier wird Joe Gallo, ein Amerikaner italienischer Herkunft, der im Bandenmilieu der New Yorker Mafia wirkte und ums Leben kam, besungen) sowie Sara und One More Cup of Coffee (Valley Below) gelingt es Dylan, gleich mehrere weitere erfolgreiche Songs zu produzieren, die zusammen mit dafür sorgen, dass dieses Album 5 Wochen in Amerika die Nr. 1 in der Chartliste bleibt [3]. Insgesamt werden in diesem Album mystisch/religiöse Themen behandelt sowie politische Einzelschicksale besungen. Der Mischung aus all diesen Komponenten verdankt dieses Album, dass es zu den Besten zählt, die Dylan je produziert hat.
