Drop-in replacement (deutsch direkter Austausch) ist ein Begriff aus der Informatik und bezeichnet die Fähigkeit einer Konfiguration, durch alleinigen Austausch eines veralteten beziehungsweise obsoleten Moduls (oder Komponente) die Systemfunktionen weiterhin ohne Einbußen zu gewährleisten. Nur auf diese Weise ist Abwärtskompatibilität ohne umfangreiche Adaptionsarbeiten gewährleistet. Im Idealfall ist mit dem Austausch ein Systemgewinn verbunden.
