Earl Rivers

Earl Rivers war ein erblicher englischer Adelstitel, der dreimal in der Peerage of England, verliehen wurde. Der Titel wurde nicht von einem Ort abgeleitet, daher auch nicht „Earl of Rivers“, sondern von einem alten Namen, der innerhalb der Familie Woodville getragen wurde, „Redvers“ oder „Reviers“, ein Name der ersten Earls of Devon.

Verleihungen

Die Earlswürde wurde erstmalig 1466 für Sir Richard Woodville verliehen. Er blieb bis 1491 in der Familie, als der dritte Earl ohne männlichen Nachkommen starb.

Die zweite Verleihung erfolgte 1626 an Thomas Darcy, 3. Baron Darcy of Temple Hurst. Aufgrund einer besonderen Nachfolgeklausel ging der Titel bei seinem Tod auf seinen Neffen über. Er erlosch beim Tode des fünften Earls 1737.

Elizabeth, die Tochter von Thomas Darcy, 1. Earl Rivers, wurde nach dessen Tode 1641 zur Countess Rivers aus eigenem Recht erhoben. Dieser Titel war jedoch nicht vererblich und erlosch daher 1650 mit ihrem Tode.

Nachgeordnete Titel

Der Großvater des ersten Earls der Verleihung von 1626 war 1551 zum Baron Darcy of Chiche erhoben worden. Der Name dieser Baronie wechselte dann später zu Baron Darcy of Temple Hurst. Eine weitere Verleihung des Titels Baron Darcy of Chiche erfolgte 1613 an den späteren ersten Earl.

Der zweite Earl dieser Verleihung hatte bereits fünf Jahre vor dem Anfall des Titels von seinem Vater dessen Titel Viscount Savage und den für seinen Großvater 1611 geschaffenen Titel eines Baronets of Savage of Rocksavage. Diese Titel erloschen ebenfalls 1737.

Eine neue Baronie Rivers existierte von 1776 bis 1880. Inhaber war die Familie Pitt bzw. Pitt-Rivers.
