Earl of Lichfield

Earl of Lichfield ist ein erblicher britischer Adelstitel in der Peerage of the United Kingdom, benannt nach der Stadt Lichfield in England, der nunmehr von der Familie Anson getragen wird. Er wurde zuvor bereits zweimal in der Peerage of England verliehen.

Stammsitz der Familie ist Shugborough Hall bei Stafford, Staffordshire, etwa 20 km von Lichfield entfernt.

Verleihungen

Der Titel wurde insgesamt dreimal verliehen. Die erste Verleihung erfolgte 1645 während des Englischen Bürgerkriegs durch König Karl II. an Charles Stewart, dessen Familie den König in vielen Schlachten des Bürgerkrieges unterstützt hatte. Dieser ertrank 1672 in Dänemark, wohin er als Botschafter entsandt worden war, ohne dass er männliche Abkömmlinge hinterließ.

Zwei Jahre später wurde der Titel an Sir Edward Henry Lee, Bt. verliehen, der mit einer illegitimen Tochter des Königs aus der Beziehung mit Barbara Villiers verheiratet war. Dessen letzter männlicher Abkömmling starb 1776.

1806 wurde dem Großneffen des berühmten Admirals und Seekriegstheoretikers George Anson der Titel Viscount Anson verliehen. Dessen Sohn Thomas William Anson wurde anlässlich der Krönung von William IV. im Jahre 1831 zum Earl of Lichfield erhoben.

Nachgeordnete Titel

Als nachgeordnete Titel führt der Earl of Lichfield heute die Titel Viscount Anson, of Shugborough und Orgrave in der Grafschaft Suffolk und Baron Soberton, of Soberton bei Southampton. Beide gehören ebenfalls zur Peerage of the United Kingdom und wurden 1806 geschaffen.

Der Titelerbe führt den Höflichkeitstitel Viscount Anson.
