Der oder das Embryo (von grch. ἔμβρυον émbryon „neugeborenes Lamm“, „ungeborene Leibesfrucht“ von ἐν en „in“ und βρύειν brýein „hervorsprießen lassen“, „schwellen“ [1]), auch der Keim oder der Keimling, ist ein Lebewesen in der frühen Form der Entwicklung. Die Wissenschaft, die sich mit der embryonalen Entwicklung, der Zelldifferenzierung und Organanlage befasst, ist die Embryologie.

Bei Tieren wird der sich aus einer befruchteten Eizelle (Zygote) neu entwickelnde Organismus als Embryo bezeichnet, solange er sich noch im Muttertier oder in einer Eihülle oder Eischale befindet. Nach Ausbildung der inneren Organe (Organogenese) – beim Menschen ab der neunten Schwangerschaftswoche – wird der Embryo als Fetus (auch Fötus geschrieben) bezeichnet.
