Emile Zuckerkandl

Emile Zuckerkandl (* 1922 in Wien, Österreich) ist ein US-amerikanischer Evolutionsbiologe.

Zuckerkandl floh 1938 vor der Verfolgung durch die Nationalsozialisten nach Paris und Algier. Er erlangte 1947 seinen Abschluss in Physiologie an der Universität von Illinois in den USA und erwarb seinen Doktortitel in Biologie an der Sorbonne in Paris.

Emile Zuckerkandl kann als einer der Mitbegründer des Forschungfeldes der molekularen Evolution angesehen werden. So postulierte er zum Beispiel zusammen mit Linus Pauling im Jahr 1962 die Hypothese einer molekularen Uhr, wonach sich Proteine mit einer konstanten Mutationsrate verändern.
