Extended Service Set

Ein Extended Service Set (ESS) ist ein Verbund aus mehreren miteinander verbundenen Access Points (AP), die über ein Distribution System (DS) zu einem WLAN-Funkzellen übergreifenden Netz verbunden sind.

Ein Benutzer kann sich innerhalb eines ESS frei bewegen, da sich die APs untereinander auf dem Laufenden halten welcher von ihnen jeweils für die Aufrechterhaltung der Funkverbindung zuständig ist.
