Herkunft und Bedeutung des Namens

Der Name Fabian (abgeleitet von Fabianus) bezeichnete die Zugehörigkeit zum römischen Adelsgeschlecht der Fabier. Deren Mitglieder trugen den Namen Fabius. Die Herkunft ist unklar, entweder von fabis (lat.) = „edel“ oder faba (lat.) = „die Bohne“.

Der berühmteste Sohn der Familie ist Fabius Maximus.

Schutzpatron

Der Heilige Fabian ist Schutzpatron der Stadt Selm in Westfalen – zusammen mit dem Heiligen Sebastian.

Im italienischen Raum sind die Formen Fabio wie auch Fabiano gebräuchlich. Die weibliche Form von Fabian ist Fabienne und im Italienischen gibt es auch die Form Fabiana sowie Fabia.
