Fredriksvern

Stavern (von 1799 bis 1930 Fredriksværn) ist eine kleine süd-norwegische Hafenstadt, die zur Kommune Larvik in der Fylke (Provinz) Vestfold gehört. Sie hat 5.514 Einwohner (Stand 1999).

Stavern wurde erstmals im 11. Jahrhundert urkundlich erwähnt. Bis 1988 war die Stadt eine eigenständige Kommune, dann wurde sie nach Larvik eingemeindet. Von 1675 bis 2002 war Stavern eine Basis zuerst der dänischen und dann der norwegischen Marine.

Heute lebt Stavern hauptsächlich vom Tourismus, in den Sommermonaten leben einschließlich der Urlauber 30.000 bis 40.000 Menschen in der Stadt.
