Gizeh (deutsche Schreibung Giseh, arabisch ‏الجيزة‎ al-Dschīza, DMG al-Ǧīza, ägyptisches Arabisch ig-Gīza) ist nach Kairo und Alexandria die drittgrößte Stadt in Ägypten. Sie grenzt unmittelbar an Kairo und gehört zur Verwaltungseinheit (Gouvernorat) al-Dschīza (il-Gīza), deren Hauptstadt sie ist. Gizeh hat 3.258.540 Einwohner.[1]

Aussprache

Die Pyramiden von Gizeh

Gizeh gibt in etwa die Aussprache im ägyptischen Arabisch wieder (z steht nicht für das deutsche z wie in Zahn, sondern für ein stimmhaftes s wie in Sonne). Im Hocharabischen beginnt das Wort mit „dsch”, in englischer Rechtschreibung meist durch „j” wiedergegeben (daher ist manchmal auch die Schreibung Jizah zu finden).

Das „h” am Ende des Wortes ist stumm (es steht für das Ta marbuta), der Endvokal kann sowohl als „a”, „ä” oder „e” ausgesprochen werden. Der Name wird, wie viele arabische Namen, meist mit dem bestimmten Artikel al- (Dialekt el-) gebraucht.

Seit dem 27. Juni 1989 ist Los Angeles in den Vereinigten Staaten eine Partnerstadt von Gizeh.
