Gleig

George Robert Gleig (* 20. April 1796 in Stirling(Schottland) ; † 9. Juli 1888 ) war ein englischer Schriftsteller und Soldat.

George Robert Gleig (spr. glegg), Sohn eines Bischofs, erhielt seine Bildung in Glasgow und Oxford, trat dann ins Militär und machte 1813 den Feldzug in Spanien, 1814 den in Amerika mit, wo er bei der Einnahme von Washington, D. C. schwer verwundet wurde.

Nach Oxford zurückgekehrt, vollendete er seine Studien, wurde 1822 zum Curate von Ash, dann zum Rektor von Ivychurch (in Kent) ernannt, 1844 Kaplan am Chelseahospital, 1846 Generalkaplan der Armee und, nachdem er einen Erziehungsplan für die Soldaten ausgearbeitet, Generalinspektor der Militärschulen und Pfründner von St. Paul. 1875 zog er sich in den Ruhestand zurück.

Seine erste schriftstellerische haltende Buch The subaltern (1825), welches sein Feldzugsleben zum Gegenstand hatte, und dem sich die Campaigns at Washington and New Orleans (1847) anschlossen.
