Googlegänger

Egosurfing ist ein aus den Wörtern Ego und Surfing zusammengesetzter Neologismus, der die weit verbreitete Praxis bezeichnet, in Suchmaschinen den eigenen Namen zu suchen.

Dies geschieht oft aus reiner Eitelkeit, daher spricht man im Englischen auch von Vanity surfing. Es kann allerdings auch dazu dienen, das eigene Image im Internet, wie es sich potentiellen Partnern oder Arbeitgebern darstellt, zu kontrollieren.[1] Personen gleichen Namens, die aufgrund einer Egosurfing-Recherche gefunden werden, bezeichnet man in Anlehnung an das Wort Doppelgänger als Googlegänger.

Der Begriff Egosurfing wurde 1995 erstmals im Wired Magazine verwendet. Im April 2004 war er Word of the Week auf der Website des Macmillan English Dictionary.[2]
