Guatemala-Stadt (spanisch Ciudad de Guatemala, offiziell La Nueva Guatemala de la Asunción) ist die Hauptstadt des mittelamerikanischen Staates Guatemala.

Geschichte

Die früheste Besiedlung durch die Maya erfolgte vor mehr als 2000 Jahren. Die Ruinen dieser Siedlung (Kaminaljuyú) können heute in einer Parkanlage im Stadtzentrum besichtigt werden. Während der spanischen Kolonialzeit entstand hier ab 1620 um ein Kloster (El Carmen) eine kleine Stadt. Nachdem die alte Hauptstadt Antigua Guatemala am 26. Juli 1773 einem Erdbeben zum Opfer fiel, wurde am 27. September 1775 Guatemala-Stadt als neue Hauptstadt des spanischen Kolonialgebietes in Mittelamerika gegründet.

Von 1823 bis zur Verlegung der Regierung nach San Salvador 1834 war Guatemala-Stadt die Hauptstadt der 1840 wieder aufgelösten Zentralamerikanischen Konföderation.

Heute ist Guatemala-Stadt mit ca. 3 Millionen Einwohnern (inoffizielle Schätzungen zur Bevölkerungszahl drehen sich bereits um die 5 Millionen, der Zuzug landloser Bauern in die Hauptstadt ist immens) sowohl die größte Stadt Guatemalas als auch (in der engeren geographischen Definition) Mittelamerikas.

Der traditionsreiche Fußballverein Aurora FC ist mehrfacher Landesmeister, seine Heimstätte ist das Estadio Del Ejército.

Der Flughafen Guatemala-Stadt gilt seit seiner 2007 abgeschlossenen Renovierung als modernster Verkehrsflughafen Zentralamerikas.
