Alphaproteobacteria (auch α-Proteobacteria) bezeichnet eine Klasse im phylogenetischen System der Bakterien, das auf der Grundlage der Basensequenz der ribosomalen 16S-Ribonucleinsäure (16S-rRNA) aufgestellt wurde. Das Phylum (der Stamm) Proteobacteria wird in die 5 Klassen Alphaproteobacteria bis Epsilonproteobacteria eingeteilt. Die Alphaproteobacteria sind, wie alle Klassen des Stammes gramnegativ.

Zu den Alphaproteobacteria gehören die Ordnungen[1]

und zahlreiche, bisher nicht sicher eingeordnete Isolate.

Wichtige Vertreter sind unter anderem in den Gattungen Rhodospirillum, Acetobacter, Rickettsia, Paracoccus, Zymomonas, Rhizobium, Bartonella, Brucella und Nitrobacter zu finden. Unter den Alphaproteobakterien kommen zahlreiche aquatisch lebende Arten vor. Hohe Anteile dieser Bakterien in Gewässerproben zeigen oft oligotrophe Verhältnisse an.
