Das Hetch Hetchy Valley im Yosemite-Nationalpark wurde 1913 gegen den Widerstand des frühen Umweltaktivisten John Muir von Woodrow Wilson zum Bau des 100 Meter hohen O'Shaughnessy Staudamms und damit zur Flutung freigegeben. Der Dammbau wurde nach Befürwortern des Projektes bedingt durch den Wasserverbrauch San Franciscos. Das Wasser der Region ist so klar, dass es bis heute keiner Filterung bedarf. Naturschützer streben seit einem der großen Umweltschädigungen des 20. Jahrhunderts nach einem Rückbau und der Wiederherstellung des einst für seine Schönheit berühmten Tals.
