Ibycus

Ibykos (bl. um 530 v. Chr., lat. Ibycus, dt. auch Ibykus) war ein griechischer Dichter aus Rhegion in Unteritalien und wurde später zum Kanon der neun Lyriker gezählt. Er führte ein Wanderleben und hielt sich längere Zeit auch auf Samos am Hof des Polykrates auf.

Einer Grabschrift zufolge starb er in seiner Vaterstadt; nach einer anderen bekannten Sage des Altertums soll er vielmehr auf der Fahrt zu den Isthmischen Spielen von Räubern ermordet, die Entdeckung der Übeltäter aber durch Kraniche herbeigeführt worden sein (vgl. auch Friedrich Schillers Ballade Die Kraniche des Ibykus von 1797).

Ibykos' Hauptruhm gründete sich auf seine erotischen Lieder, die eine glühende Sinnlichkeit atmen. Sammlung der spärlichen Überreste seiner 7 Bücher Gedichte in Schneidewins Delectus poesis Graecorum elegiacae (Göttingen 1839) und Bergks Poetae lyrici Graeci Bd. 3. (Vgl. auch: Georgios P.
