Information Overload

Der Begriff Informationsüberflutung (engl. Information overload oder information flood) bezeichnet den Zustand „zu viele“ Informationen zu einem Thema zu besitzen, um eine Entscheidung treffen zu können. Er wird gewöhnlich im Zusammenhang mit verschiedenen Formen der netzbasierten Kommunikation wie beispielsweise der E-Mail verwendet. Große Mengen (eine „Flut“) an alten Daten, an neu hinzugefügten Daten, Widersprüche in vorhandenen Daten und ein niedriges Signal-Rausch-Verhältnis, also ein hohes Rauschen (im übertragenen Sinne), machen es schwierig, Informationen zu filtern, die für eine Entscheidung relevant sein könnten. Unwissen über Methoden des Vergleichens und Aufarbeitens von Informationen unterstützt diesen Effekt ebenfalls.

Der englische Begriff Information overload wurde 1970 von Alvin Toffler in seinem Buch Future Shock geprägt.
