James David Forbes (* 20. April 1809 in Colinton bei Edinburgh; † 31. Dezember 1868) war ein schottischer Physiker.

Leben

Forbes studierte an der Universität Edinburgh, an der er ab 1833 Professor war. Er forschte vor allem auf den Gebieten der Wärmeleitung, der Seismologie und der Glaziologie.

Im Alter von 19 Jahren wurde er ein Mitglied der Royal Society of Edinburgh; 1832 wurde er zum Mitglied („Fellow“) der Royal Society of London gewählt. Die Royal Society zeichnete ihn 1838 mit der Rumford Medal und 1843 mit der Royal Medal aus.
