James Gleason

James Gleason (* 23. Mai 1882 in New York, NY; † 12. April 1959 in Los Angeles) war ein US-amerikanischer Schauspieler, Dramatiker und Drehbuchautor.

Leben

Kahl und schmächtig, mit einer markanten Stimme, portraitierte Gleason vor allem derbe, aber warmherzige Charaktere, gewöhnlich mit New Yorker Hintergrund. Er erschien in zahlreichen Filmen an der Seite seiner Frau Lucile.

Gleason schrieb am Script für The Broadway Melody mit, dem zweiten Film, der den Oscar für den besten Film erhielt. Er selbst hatte eine kleinere Rolle darin. Im Film Urlaub für die Liebe von 1945 spielte er an der Seite seiner Frau einen Milchwagenfahrer, der Judy Garland und Robert Walker in Sachen Ehe unterweist.

Für den Film Urlaub vom Himmel wurde er für den Oscar für den besten Nebendarsteller nominiert.

Seine wohl bekannteste Rolle war jedoch die des Birdie Steptoe in Charles Laughtons legendärer, einziger Regiearbeit Die Nacht des Jägers, an der Seite von Robert Mitchum, Shelley Winters und Lillian Gish. Er spielte einen alten, gutmütigen Witwer, der schließlich, da er sich im Kummer betrinkt, den von Robert Mitchums Filmcharakter bedrohten Kindern nicht helfen kann. 1958 war er neben Spencer Tracy in Das letzte Hurra zu sehen.

James Gleason war 42 Jahre (bis zu ihrem Tod) mit Lucile verheiratet, sie hatten einen Sohn, Russell, der ebenfalls Schauspieler wurde. James Gleason starb 1959 an Asthma und wurde auf dem Friedhof „Holy Cross Cemetery“ in Culver City, Kalifornien begraben.
