James Hamilton, 1. Duke of Abercorn KG, PC (* 21. Januar 1811 in Mayfair, London; † 31. Oktober 1885 in London), war ein schottischer Adliger und britischer Staatsmann.

Leben

James Hamilton war ein Sohn des James Hamilton, Viscount Hamilton, und dessen Gemahlin Harriet Douglas. Er folgte seinem Großvater John James Hamilton, 1. Marquess of Abercorn, 1818 als 2. Marquess of Abercorn.

Er war Oberkammerherr des Prinzgemahls Albert, 1866 bis 1868 unter dem Ministerium Derby-Disraeli Lord Lieutenant of Ireland. 1868 wurde er zum Duke of Abercorn erhoben. Von 1874 bis 1876 war Hamilton erneut Lord Lieutenant of Ireland.

Hamilton war Generalmajor der königlichen Leibwache von Schottland, Mitglied des Privy Councils und Großmeister des Freimaurerordens in Irland. Als Erbe der Hamiltons beanspruchte er auch den 1548 dem Earl of Arran verliehenen Titel Herzog von Châtellerault, der jedoch 1864 von Napoléon III. dem aus einer älteren, aber weiblichen Linie stammenden Duke of Hamilton zugesprochen wurde. 1881 wurde er Kanzler der University of Ireland.

James Hamilton heiratete 1832 Louisa Jane (1812-1905), Tochter des John Russell, 6. Duke of Bedford, mit der er folgende Kinder hatte:
