Kafue National Park

Der Kafue National-Park (Kafue National Park) ist ein Naturschutzgebiet in Sambia.

Er umfasst 22.400 km², etwa 190 km von Nord nach Süd und etwa 85 km von Ost nach West, am Lufupa und Lunga, zwei Nebenflüssen des Kafue und ist damit einer der größten Nationalparks der Welt. Er liegt gut 200 km westlich von der Stadt Kafue am Oberlauf des gleichnamigen Flusses am 370 km² großen Itezhitezhi-See, der vor dem Stausee der Kafue-Talsperre angelegt ist und dessen Wasserstand reguliert.

Der Park gilt als Afrikas reichstes Antilopengebiet. Er umfasst im Norden am Lufupa-Wald (Baikiaea plurijuga, sogenanntes Sambesi-Teak, das wegen seiner Härte als Bahnschwelle und Parkett sehr gefragt ist, Pterocarpus angolensis, Guibourtia coleosperma) und weite, offene Auen, worunthttp://de.wikipedia.org/skins-1.5/common/images/button_link.png Interner Linker die Busanga-Auen die bekanntesten sind. Im Süden wandelt sich der Park von Wald erst in Buschland und nimmt dann immer stärker den Charakter der Kalahari an. Hier gilt die Nazhila-Ebene als besonders attraktiv.

Der Wildbestand des Parkes gilt als stark gewildert. Der Baumbestand, vor allem Teak, ist stark gelichtet. Die Armut und der wirtschaftliche Druck der 1990er Jahre haben ihre Spuren hinterlassen.

Mit etwa 18 Tieren pro 1000 Quadratkilometer (im nördlichen Teil) beherbergt der Nationalpark eine der letzten lebensfähigen Wildhund-Populationen Afrikas. Weitere große Raubtiere des Parks sind Löwen, Fleckenhyänen und Leoparden. Die häufigsten Pflanzenfresser sind Impalas, Pukus und Warzenschweine, darüber hinaus findet man Steppenzebras, Streifengnus, Kuhantilopen, Litschi-Moorantilopen, Großkudus, Wasserböcke, Buschböcke, Kronenducker und Oribis. Relativ selten sind Büffel, Rappenantilopen und Pferdeantilopen[1].
