Killer application

Eine Killerapplikation (auch englisch: killer application) ist eine konkrete Anwendung, die einer schon existierenden Technologie zum Durchbruch verhilft. Zuvor stieß diese Technologie auf wenig Interesse, denn man sah keine Verwendung für sie.

Die Namensgebung leitet sich daher ab, dass ähnliche und oft ältere Konkurrenz-Technologien schnell verdrängt, also getötet (englisch: to kill) werden.

Im Bereich der EDV ist es dasjenige Anwendungsprogramm, das beim breiten Publikum genügend Interesse weckt, um eine zugrundeliegende Technik zu kaufen. Ohne diese Technik kann man das Anwendungsprogramm nicht nutzen. Deshalb spricht man auch von „software sells the hardware“.

Schlagwort im Marketing

Der Begriff der Killerapplikation wird im Marketing auch als Schlagwort (engl.: "Buzzword") gebraucht, um Eigenschaften eines Produktes zu definieren, mit dem man sich gegen konkurrierende Produkte durchsetzen kann. So wird ganz bewusst nach Applikationen gesucht, die einer unterliegenden vielseitig erweiterbaren Technik zum Durchbruch gegen bekannte Alternativen verhelfen können. Historisch gesehen waren viele Killerapplikation zufällig: Die Vorläufer der Software gab es schon in einem anderen Kontext, und erst verknüpft mit neu vermarkteter Hardware fanden sie eine unerwartet rasante Verbreitung.
