In KDE 3 war Kooka das Standard-Scanprogramm;in KDE 4 wurde es durch das Programm Skanlite abgelöst.[2]
Eingelesene Texte können durch ein Texterkennungsmodul (OCR) mit Rechtschreibprüfung in Textdaten umgewandelt werden. Kooka benutzt GOCR als Backend für die Texterkennung und stützt sich auf die Unterstützung der SANE-Bibliothek.
