Lady Chapel

Eine Lady Chapel oder Marienkapelle ist eine der Maria geweihte und deutlich nach außen vorstehende – und daher im Grundriss auch deutlich zu erkennende – Scheitelkapelle am Ostende einer englischen Kathedrale.

Traditionellerweise ist eine Lady Chapel die größte Kapelle einer Kathedrale. Sie wurde in der Regel östlich des Hauptaltares errichtet. Berühmte Beispiele stehen bzw. standen in Winchester, Salisbury, Exeter, Wells, St Albans, Chichester, Peterborough und Norwich (die beiden letzteren wurden zerstört). In Durham befindet sie sich allerdings als Nartex im Westen.

Die früheste Lady Chapel finden wir in der anglo-sächsischen Kathedrale von Canterbury. Hier wurde ihr Standort innerhalb der Kirche mehrfach verändert. Erzbischof Lanfranc verlegte sie zuerst an das Westende des Schiffes, dann – 1450 – an die Ostseite des Nord-Querschiffes. In Ely wurde sie ebenfalls an das nördliche Querhaus angegliedert – in Rochester dagegen westlich des südlichen Querhausarmes.

Die größte jemals gebaute Lady Chapel wurde um 1220 von Heinrich III. in der Westminster Abbey errichtet mit einer Ausdehnung von 30 Fuß. Sie grenzt heute an die Kapelle Heinrichs VII.

Andere erwähnenswerte Beispiele einer Lady Chapel stehen in Ottery-St-Mary (Thetford), Bury St. Edmund’s (Wimborne), Christ Church (Hampshire), Compton Church (Surrey), Compton Martin (Somersetshire) und Darenth (Kent). In Croyland Abbey gab es sogar zwei Lady Chapels.

Eine Entsprechung zur Lady Chapel im Kirchenbau der norddeutschen Backsteingotik sind die Marientidenkapellen.
