Das Laser Ranging System des geodätischen Observatoriums Wettzell ermöglicht auch die präzise Messung des Mondabstandes.

In der Astronomie ist lunar distance (LD) (deutsch: Mondabstand) die Entfernung von der Erde zum Mond. Sie beträgt im Durchschnitt 384.403 Kilometer.

Hochpräzise Messungen des Mondabstandes werden erzielt, indem die Zeit gemessen wird, die das Licht benötigt, um die Strecke zwischen LIDAR-Stationen auf der Erde und Retroreflektoren auf der Mondoberfläche zurückzulegen.

Der Mond verfolgt eine spiralförmige Bahn, die ihn von der Erde um jährlich durchschnittlich 3,8 cm entfernt; dies wurde durch das „Lunar Laser Ranging Experiment“ festgestellt.

Die älteste bekannte Messung der Entfernung Erde–Mond erfolgte im 2. vorchristlichen Jahrhundert und wurde von dem Astronom und Geografen Hipparchos vorgenommen, der seinen Berechnungen einfache Trigonometrie zugrunde legte. Seine Berechnungen wichen ungefähr 26.000 Kilometer von der tatsächlichen Entfernung ab – ein Unterschied von nur 6,8 Prozent.
