Aristotelia serrata (in Neuseeland Wineberry oder auf Maori Makomako) ist ein neuseeländisches Gehölz.

Vorkommen

Die Pflanze ist in Neuseeland endemisch und kommt dort auf beiden Hauptinseln sowie Stewart Island vor.

Sie ist in Wäldern und Gehölzen vom Tiefland bis Gebirge verbreitet. Sie bevorzugt einen feuchten, aber durchlässigen Boden in sonniger oder halbschattiger Lage mit saurem bis neutralem PH-Wert. Die Pflanze ist vor allem an Waldrändern und feuchten Flussufern verbreitet. In Neuseeland ist sie eine Pionierpflanze auf Ödland und Kahlschlägen [1]

Beschreibung

Der Strauch oder kleine Baum kann eine Höhe von 7,5-9 m erreichen. Die langstieligen Blätter sind breit, auf der Unterseite rötlich und 5-12 cm lang. Die Blüte erscheint im Mai und ist rot-weiß gefärbt. Die Pflanze ist zweihäusig und wird von Insekten bestäubt. Die schwarzen Beeren sind 6-9 mm groß.

Die Pflanze ist frostempfindlich und wirft in kälterem Klima im Winter einen Teil der Blätter ab.

Verwendung

Die Beeren des Baumes sind essbar.

Die Pflanze soll sich als Arzneipflanze gegen Rheuma, Augenerkrankungen und für Umschläge eignen [2]

Das Holz kann für Schreinerarbeiten, zum Drechseln und andere Holzarbeiten sowie zur Gewinnung von Holzkohle verwendet werden. [3] [4]

Aus den Beeren lässt sich ein blauschwarzer Farbstoff gewinnen. [5]
