Die weibliche Namensform Mattea (oder Matthäa) leitet sich vom männlichen hebräischen Namen Matthäus ab. Matthäus und Matthias sind Kurzformen des biblischen Namens (griechisch) Mattathias, der wiederum vom hebräischen Namen Mattitjah(u) abgeleitet ist. Mattitjah(u) bedeutet „von JHWH gegeben“, was modern häufig in "Geschenk Gottes" abgewandelt wird.
