John Mayow

John Mayow (* 24. Mai 1640 [nach Encyclopedia Britannica; nach anderen Quellen zwischen 1641 und 1643] in Cornwall; † 1679 ebenda) war ein britischer Chemiker und Physiologe.

Mayow studierte ab 1658 Jura und Medizin an der Oxford University. Nach seinem Bachelor-Abschluss 1665 und der Erlangung des Doktorgrades 1670 arbeitete er als Arzt und Naturforscher.

In seiner Dissertation 1669 gab er Erklärungen für die Atmung und für Verbrennungsprozesse. Er vertrat die Ansicht, dass Luft aus zwei Teilen bestehe, von denen ein Teil für das Atmen zum Leben notwendig sei.

Ab 1678 war er Mitglied der Royal Society.
