Middle of the Road war eine schottische Band, die vor allem in der ersten Hälfte der 1970er-Jahre mit einprägsamen Pop-Songs in Europa erfolgreich war.

Bandgeschichte

Die Leadsängerin Sally Carr (* 28. März 1945), Schlagzeuger Ken Andrew (* 28. August 1947), Gitarrist Ian Lewis Campbell, bürgerlich Ian McCredie (* 15. Juli 1948) und am Bass sein Bruder Eric Lewis Campbell, bürgerlich Eric McCredie (* 17. Juli 1945; † 6. Oktober 2007) aus Glasgow gründeten die Band am 1. April 1970. Seit 1967 spielten sie als Karen and the Sofisticats und ab 1968 als „Part Three“ und danach in lateinamerikanischer Aufmachung als „Los Caracas“ zusammen.

Da sie in ihrer Heimat Schottland ebenso wie in England keinen Erfolg hatten, siedelte die Gruppe 1970 nach Italien um. Dort traf man auf den Musikproduzenten Giacomo Tosti, welcher der Formation den markanten, gruppentypischen Sound verpasste und ihnen damit zum internationalen Durchbruch verhalf.

Im April 1971 hatte die Band ihren ersten Welt-Hit mit Chirpy Chirpy Cheep Cheep, der heute zu den bekanntesten Pop-Klassikern der 1970er Jahre zählt. Bevor Autor Lally Stott den Song Middle of the Road überließ und zu deren Version auch Backgroundvocals beisteuerte, hatte er bereits seine eigene Aufnahme in Italien und Australien veröffentlicht, wo sie im Juni 1971 die Spitzenposition der Singlecharts erreichte[1].

Es folgten bis 1973 neun weitere Hitparaden-Platzierungen mit Tweedle Dee Tweedle Dum, Soley Soley (1971), Sacramento, Samson and Delilah, Bottoms Up (1972), Yellow Boomerang (1973) und anderen. Im Jahr 1974 schloss sich der Gitarrist Neil Henderson (* 11. Februar 1953), ebenfalls aus Glasgow, der Gruppe an. Er schrieb zwar noch einige mehr oder weniger erfolgreiche Titel für die Band, die Verkaufszahlen früherer Jahre wurden jedoch nicht mehr erreicht.

Ein Teil der Gruppe tritt auch heute noch als „Middle of the Road feat. Sally Carr“ bei Musikveranstaltungen live auf. Die Brüder McCredie (ergänzt durch den jungen Stuart McCredie) formierten 1993 zusammen mit Leadsängerin Lorraine Feldberg und Gitarrist Jim Keilt eine zweite Band. Ihr Album „Middle of the Road - Happy to Be Back“ (1994) erreichte zwar keine nennenswerten Verkaufszahlen, forcierte jedoch den alten Streit um den Namen der Band. Sally Carr leugnete öffentlich, die McCredies zu kennen, sie behauptete in einem TV-Interview, „fremde Musiker" hätten den Band-Namen „gestohlen“. (Nach Presseberichten der 70er Jahre war sie jedoch 1970 als letztes Mitglied in die bereits bestehende Band eingestiegen, ursprünglich nur als Aushilfe für ihre erkrankte Vorgängerin...)
