Es wurde 1931 von Shreve, Lamb and Harmon im Baustil des Art Déco errichtet. Parallel errichtete die Firma auch das derzeit höchste Gebäude New Yorks, das Empire State Building. Innerhalb New Yorks ist es mit 216 Metern Höhe das 35-höchste Gebäude. Äußerlich ähnelt das Gebäude dem Empire State Building leicht.
