Whangara ist eine kleine Gemeinde im Nordosten der Nordinsel Neuseelands. Sie liegt zwischen dem etwa 15 km südwestlich gelegenen Gisborne und dem 22 km nordöstlich gelegenen Tolaga Bay, fünf Kilometer südwestlich des Kaps Gable End Foreland.

Der State Highway 35 führt zwei Kilometer westlich am Ort vorbei.

Whangara ist bekannt als der Ort, wo Roman und Film "Whale Rider" spielen und der Film gedreht wurde.
