CD-Key

Ein CD-Key ist ein Softwarekopierschutz-Mechanismus mit einem Schlüssel, welcher bei der Installation bzw. beim ersten Start der Software eingegeben werden muss. Er besteht in der Regel aus einem (auf den ersten Blick) zufälligen Gemisch aus Buchstaben und Zahlen. Durch dieses Verfahren können Software-CD-ROMs/-DVDs zwar kopiert, aber die Software dann ohne den Schlüssel nicht benutzt werden. Dies soll die Nutzung von nicht lizenzierter Software verhindern bzw. erschweren.

Oft werden CD-Keys in Verbindung mit Onlineangeboten genutzt, so dass zum Beispiel bei Spielen nur ein Benutzeraccount pro CD-Key erstellt werden kann.

Da CD-Keys durch die Software mit mathematischen und anderen Verfahren auf ihre Echtheit geprüft werden können, sind nur bestimmte Keymöglichkeiten vorhanden, deren Anzahl meist deutlich unterhalb der theoretisch durch Permutationen möglichen Anzahl liegt. Die in den CD-Keys auftretenden mathematischen Regelmäßigkeiten nutzen findige Programmierer aus, um sog. (CD-)Key Generatoren (kurz: Keygen) zu programmieren, um so auf Knopfdruck neue Schlüssel zu erzeugen. Jedoch können diese generierten Schlüssel nicht für das Onlinespielen genutzt werden, weil die Hersteller bei jedem Login die Daten mit einer Datenbank, in welcher die gültigen Schlüssel gespeichert werden, abgleichen. Dabei können die Hersteller auch gültige Schlüssel zeitweilig oder dauerhaft sperren, falls ein berechtigter Missbrauchsverdacht wie beim Cheaten in Spielen vorliegt.

Mittlerweile kann man dank Plattformen wie Steam auch schon Spiele online kaufen und diese dann herunterladen. Im Prinzip kauft man sich damit einen CD-Key, welcher dann mit dem jeweiligen Benutzerkonto verknüpft wird und online im Benutzerkonto hinterlegt ist. Beim Start des jeweiligen Programms/Spiels wird dann über die jeweilige Plattform und das Benutzerkonto geprüft, ob eine gültige Lizenz zum Start des Programms vorliegt. Dies setzt in den meisten Fällen eine bestehende Internetverbindung voraus. Je nach Programm und Plattform kann aber auch, nachdem eine einmalige Aktivierung bei aktiver Internetverbindung erfolgte, in einem Offline-Modus gearbeitet werden.
