Bataireacht

Bataireacht (Syn.: Uisce Beatha Bata Rince, Kurzform "Bata") (irisch-gälisch für Stockkampf)[1] ist ein, besonders in den Jahren 1750 - 1880 in Irland ausgeübter Freizeitsport, der jedoch später durch andere Sportarten verdrängt worden war.[2]

Es bezeichnet das Kampfsystem der Iren mit dem Shillelagh und ist eine historische europäische Kampfkunst, die jedoch noch heute in geringem Umfang praktiziert wird.[3] Bata beinhaltet heutzutage aber mehr als nur reine Kampftechniken mit dem Spazierstock irischer Art, sondern auch Techniken des Schwertkampfes, waffenlose Kampftechniken (Boxen, Ringen) und den Einsatz verschiedenster Holzwaffen (Langstock, Kurzstock, Spazierstock, Knüppel etc.). Die Amerikaner John W. Hurley und Ken Pfrenger gelten als Rekonstrukteure und Experten zum Thema Bata und Shillelagh und haben schon diverse Seminare darüber abgehalten und Bücher dazu verfasst.[4]
