Hung parliament

Als hung parliament wird im englischsprachigen Raum die Situation bezeichnet, dass bei einer Parlamentswahl im Mehrheitswahlverfahren keine der beiden Parteien im Zweiparteiensystem eine Mehrheit erreicht. Während diese Situation in Ländern mit Verhältniswahl normal ist (und daher nicht als hung parliament bezeichnet wird), ist dies bei Wahlen mit Mehrheitswahlsystem die (unerwünschte) Ausnahme. Die Situation des Hung parliaments kann durch die Bildung einer Koalitionsregierung, einer Minderheitsregierung oder Neuwahlen aufgelöst werden.

Synonym für hung parliament wird balanced parliament [1][2] oder (legislature under) no overall control verwendet.[3][4][5] Einen vergleichbaren Ausdruck im Deutschen gibt es nicht.

Ebenfalls kann ein hung parliament durch Nachwahlen oder Parteiwechsel entstehen.
