Open Education

Open Education bezeichnet ein Konzept der Wissensvermittlung über das Internet, das einerseits auf freien Lernmaterialien (vgl. Open Educational Resources, Open Access) und andererseits auf allgemein zugänglichen Lernplattformen basiert. Open Education ist nicht gleichzusetzen mit E-Learning, nutzt aber dieselben technischen Mittel.

Eine der wichtigsten Umsetzungen des Open-Education-Prinzips ist das OpenCourseWare-Programm, das 2002 vom Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) gestartet wurde und dem inzwischen über 200 Hochschulen und Organisationen angehören (Stand: Mai 2010). Zu den Vordenkern von Open Education gehört David Wiley.[1] Ähnlich wie die Open-Access-Bewegung ihre Ziele in der Berliner Erklärung über offenen Zugang zu wissenschaftlichem Wissen definiert hat, sind die Grundsätze der Open-Education-Bewegung in der Cape Town Open Education Declaration[2] festgehalten.
