European Social Survey

Der European Social Survey (ESS) ist eine sozialwissenschaftliche Umfrage, die soziale und politische Einstellungen der Bevölkerung aus über 20 europäischen Staaten untersucht. Dabei handelt es sich um das bislang größte europäische sozialwissenschaftliche Umfrageprojekt. Damit soll eine langfristig angelegte und vergleichbare Sozialforschung in Europa etabliert werden, die sich an höchsten wissenschaftlichen Standards orientiert.

Nach dem Start zum ESS 1995 erfolgte die erste Befragungswelle im Jahr 2002. Das Projekt wird durch die Kommission der Europäischen Union gefördert. Es erhielt 2006 den Descartes-Preis, weil durch die strikte Selektion der Befragten sowie der häufigen Qualitätskontrollen mit der Langzeitstudie neue Maßstäbe für interkulturell vergleichende Studien gesetzt wurden.

Die Deutsche Sektion des Projekts wird vom Mannheimer Politikwissenschaftler Jan van Deth koordiniert, der selbst mit der Teilstudie "Gesellschaft und Demokratie in Europa" beteiligt ist. Der deutsche Projektteil wurde in die DFG-Langzeitfinanzierung aufgenommen.[1]
