Japanese Bobtail (auch japanische Stummelschwanzkatze) ist eine japanische Katzenrasse, die durch ihren kurzen Schwanz und den hoppelnden Gang auffällt. Sie wird heute in einer langhaarigen (Japanese Bobtail Longhair) und einer kurzhaarigen Variante (Japanese Bobtail Shorthair) gezüchtet.

Ursprung

In Japan gelten, wie in einigen anderen asiatischen Ländern, Katzen mit kurzem Schwanz als Glücksbringer. Dies führt in der Praxis dazu, dass teilweise Katzen verstümmelt werden. Bei dem kurzen Schwanz der Japanese Bobtail handelt es sich jedoch um eine erbliche rezessive Mutation, welche von japanischen Züchtern herausgezüchtet wurde. Sie unterscheidet sich von den dominanten Mutationen, die die Rassen Kurilian Bobtail und Pixie-Bob auszeichnen.

In Japan werden dreifarbige Katzen besonders hoch geschätzt.

Auf einer weiblichen Japanese Bobtail-Katze basiert auch die fiktive Figur Hello Kitty.
