Axolotl (Wasserspiel, Amblystoma tigrinum Green, A. mexicanum Cove. s. Tafel »Schwanzlurche I«, Fig. 5 u. 6), Schwanzlurch aus der Unterordnung der Salamandrinen, 14 cm lang, gedrungen gebaut, mit dickem, breitem Kopf, dickem Schwanz, vierzehigen Vorder-, fünfzehigen Hinterfüßen, dunkel braungrün, weißlich gefleckt, lebt als Larve mit drei Paar Kiemenbüscheln an jeder Seite und schwachem Kamm auf dem Rücken und Schwanz in Mexiko, pflanzt sich in diesem Zustande fort und verwandelt sich niemals. Die ersten Exemplare des Tieres brachte Humboldt nach Europa, und sie wurden als Siredon pisciformis Shaw. beschrieben. 1865 pflanzte sich der A. in Paris fort, und von den Larven erlitten einige eine Metamorphose, indem sie Kamm und Kiemen verloren und weiß gefleckt wurden. Unter Verhältnissen, die dem Tier den Gebrauch der Kiemen erschweren, den der Lungen aber erleichtern, läßt sich die Metamorphose regelmäßig herbeiführen, aber das entwickelte Tier wird nicht geschlechtsreif. In seiner vollendeten Form kommt der A. gegenwärtig, wie es scheint, in der Natur nicht mehr vor. Andre Arten, wie A. opacum Grav. und A. punctatum L., unterliegen regelmäßig der Metamorphose. Der A. hat aalartiges, genießbares Fleisch. Man erhält ihn in Aquarien leicht mit Regenwürmern, Rindfleisch etc.
