Das Volt ist die abgeleitete SI-Einheit der elektrischen Spannung mit dem Einheitenzeichen V. Das Volt ist (seit 1897) nach dem italienischen Physiker Alessandro Volta benannt.

Definition

Die elektrische Spannung von einem Volt zwischen zwei Punkten eines homogenen, gleichmäßig temperierten Linienleiters liegt dann vor, wenn bei einem stationären Strom von einem Ampere zwischen diesen beiden Punkten die Leistung von einem Watt umgesetzt wird.

In Formelzeichen gilt: U=\frac{W}{Q} „Spannung ist Arbeitsvermögen pro Ladungsmenge“

International ist das Formelzeichen für Spannung ein U, im angelsächsischen Sprachraum auch häufig ein V (Voltage).

Praktische Festlegung

Da die obige Definition in der Praxis nur schwer als genaue Referenz eingesetzt werden kann, wird seit 1990 ein Volt mittels des Josephson-Effekts und der Josephson-Konstante, des Kehrwerts des magnetischen Flussquantums, festgelegt. Diese Konstante beträgt:


K_J = \frac{2e}{h} = 4,835979 \cdot 10^\mathrm{14}\frac{\mathrm{Hz}}{\mathrm{V}}\,

Damit kann mit Referenzmessungen die Festlegung von einem Volt auf eine sehr genaue Frequenzmessung (Zeitmessung) zurückgeführt werden.

Historische Definition

Früher wurde die Definition von einem Volt von dem Weston-Normalelement abgeleitet. Dieses Element liefert bei einer Temperatur von genau 20 °C eine elektrische Spannung von

UN = 1,01865 V.

Dezimale Vielfache und Teilungen des Volts

  • Ein Kilovolt, abgekürzt kV, entspricht 1.000 Volt: 1 kV = 103 V. Es wird insbesondere in der Energietechnik für Hochspannungen benutzt.
  • Ein Millivolt, abgekürzt mV, entspricht dem Tausendstel eines Volt: 1 mV = 10-3 V oder 0,001 V. Gebräuchlich ist diese Einheit in der Elektronik, die auch mit niedrigen Spannungen arbeitet.
  • Ein Mikrovolt, oft µV geschrieben, entspricht einem Millionstel Volt: 1 µV = 10-6 V.
