Charlestown ist eine Stadt im Washington County in Rhode Island.
Geschichte
Charlestown, benannt nach König Karl II., wurde 1738 gegründet. Das Gebiet war zuvor Teil der Stadt Westerly. Es wurde darauf geteilt und der Teil nördlich des Pawcatuck-Flusses wurde 1747 zur Stadt Richmond.
Raketenexperimente
Seit 1965 werden von Charlestown bei 41°22' nördlicher Breite und 71°40' westlicher Länge Höhenforschungsraketen gestartet. Die größte Startkampagne fand am 30. Mai 1965 im Zuge einer totalen Sonnenfinsternis statt.
