Norman Lowrey

Norman Lowrey ist ein US-amerikanischer Komponist, Aktionskünstler und Musikpädagoge.

Lowrey studierte an der Eastman School of Music und ist Kompositionsschüler von Pauline Oliveros. Er ist Professor für Musik und Leiter des Musikdepartments an der Drew University in Madison.

Mit Förderung der Geraldine R. Dodge Foundation initiierte er 1994 gemeinsam mit Cynthia Poten das Projekt River Sounding, bei dem Künstler unter dem Eindruck der Klänge und Stille des Delaware River Werke schufen. An dem Projekt beteiligten sich die Maler Doug und July Alderfer-Abbot, der Komponist David Dunn, die visuellen Künstler Alan Gussow und Nura Petrov und die Dichterin und Filmemacherin Cecilia Vicuna.

Bekannt wurde Lowrey vor allem mit seinen Singing Masks, Masken aus Holz und Keramik, in die Flöten, Rasseln und andere Musikinstrumente integriert sind, so dass jede Maske eine eigene Stimme hat. Sie wurden u.a. im New Jersey State Museum ausgestellt. Aufführungen mit den Masken fanden u.a. im Plan B in Santa Fe, im Lincoln Center in New York und im The Deep Listening Space in Kingston/New York statt.
