Der Singapore Armed Forces Football Club, kurz SAF FC, ist ein singapurischer Fußballverein. Aktuell spielt der Verein in der professionellen S. League, der höchsten Spielklasse Singapurs. Der Singapore Armed Forces FC ist der erfolgreichste Klub des Landes und ist mit acht Meistertiteln Rekordmeister sowie mit vier Pokalerfolgen Rekordpokalsieger (dies zusammen mit Home United). Seit 2001 trägt der Verein seine Heimspiele im Choa Chu Kang Stadion aus.

Vereinsgeschichte

Der Verein repräsentiert die Streitkräfte Singapurs (SAF). Davor gab es bereits die Singapore Armed Forces Sports Association, welche von 1975 bis 1995 die SAF in der inoffiziellen National Football League und der Premier League repräsentierte.

Als die S. League gegründet wurde zog die SFA die SAFSA vom Ligabetrieb zurück, und gründete am 16. Februar 1995 den heutigen SAFFC für die Teilnahme an der S. League.

Von Beginn an dominierte die SAFFC die neue S. League und ist heute Rekordmeister mit sieben Titeln. 2008 gelang das Double aus Meisterschaft und Pokal, was vorher noch keinem Verein der S. League gelungen war.

Durch den Gewinn der Meisterschaft 2008, durfte der Verein an der Qualifikation zur AFC Champions League 2009 teilnehmen. In der ersten Runde gewann der Verein gegen die PEA aus Thailand. Im Finale konnte der PSMS Medan aus Indonesien bezwungen werden und die Armed Forces zog als erster singapurischer Verein in die Champions League ein. Großen Anteil am Erfolg hatte hierbei der frühere MVP der AFC Champions League Therdsak Chaiman. In beiden Spielen erzielte er jeweils ein wichtiges Tor.

Maskottchen und Spitzname

Das Maskottchen, welches auch im Vereinswappen zu sehen ist, ist ein Rhinozeros. Der Spitzname des Vereins ist aber „The Warriors“, also „Die Krieger“. Ursprünglich wollte der Verein einen Warriror als Maskottchen haben, was aber nicht im Sinne der S. League war. Diese wollte nur Tiere als Maskottchen haben und lehnte den Krieger ab. Statt dessen schlug die S. League vor man solle doch einen Wolf wählen. Dies wiederum gefiel der SAF nicht, da ein Wolf nicht das Bild und die Eigenschaften der SAF widerspiegle. Daher entschloss man sich zum Rhinozeros als Wappentier.
