Happy Nation ist das Debütalbum von Ace of Base, das Ende 1992 bzw. Anfang 1993 bei Warner Bros. erschien. Es zählt zu den am besten verkauften Debütalben mit mindestens 19 Millionen verkauften Platten; damals war es das am besten verkaufte aller Zeiten und wurde daher 1995 ins Guinness Buch der Rekorde aufgenommen.[1] Bis heute ist es das dritterfolgreichste Debütalbum einer Gruppe nach Guns N’ Roses und Linkin Park. Es erreichte Platz eins der Charts in 14 Ländern, darunter auch Deutschland.

Geschichte

Nachdem die Gruppe das Stück Another Mother des schwedischen Künstlers Kayo gehört hatte, beschloss sie, ähnliche Musik zu machen. Sie nahm einen Song namens The Ace auf und schickte ihn dem Produzenten Denniz Pop. Dieser nahm die Gruppe unter Vertrag. Aus dem Stück, das er als Demo bekommen hatte, wurde der internationale Hit All That She Wants. Der Erfolg des Albums begann zunächst Ende 1992 in den skandinavischen Ländern, unter anderem in Dänemark. 1993 erschien das Album in weiteren Ländern. Für die US-Veröffentlichung wurden neue Stücke aufgenommen, darunter The Sign. Unter diesem Titel erschien in den USA auch das Album.[2]

Kritik

Die Website Allmusic nannte die Hooklines der drei Hitsingles „catchy“, d.h. eingängig. Ace of Base hätten ein Album mit melodischem Euro Disco erschaffen, das ein Welterfolg wurde.[2]

Happy Nation (US-Version)/The Sign

In den USA, Kanada, Japan und Mexiko erschien das Album am 23. November 1993 unter dem Titel The Sign. Auch in Europa wurde das Album als Happy Nation (US-Version) wiederveröffentlicht, bereits am 25. September 1993. Es enthielt neue Stücke und eine Remix-Version. In Großbritannien erreichte die Wiederveröffentlichung mit Platz eins einen größeren Erfolg als die erste Veröffentlichung mit Platz 21.
