Robert Kearns

Robert William Kearns (* 10. März 1927 in Gary (Indiana); † 9. Februar 2005 in Baltimore) war ein US-amerikanischer Ingenieur. Bekannt wurde er durch die Erfindung des Intervall-Scheibenwischers, für die er am 1. Dezember 1964 die erste US-Patentanmeldung hinterlegte. Das erste Patent zu dieser Erfindung, das US 3,351,836, wurde am 7. November 1967 erteilt. Kearns verklagte Ford und Chrysler wegen der Verletzung seiner Patente und gewann diese langwierigen Prozesse: 1990 wurde zunächst Ford zu 10 Millionen US-Dollar Schadensersatz verurteilt, später auch Chrysler zu 18,7 Millionen Dollar. Der US-amerikanische Spielfilm Flash of Genius aus dem Jahr 2008 erzählt seine Geschichte.

Leben

Kearns wuchs in der Nähe der Ford-Werke in River Rouge, Michigan auf. Er erwarb Abschlüsse der University of Detroit Mercy und der Wayne State University und einen Doktortitel vom Case Institute of Technology, einer Vorgängereinrichtung der Case Western Reserve University. Im Zweiten Weltkrieg arbeitete er für das Office of Strategic Services, einen Vorläufer der CIA.[1]
