Theatre World Award ist ein US-amerikanischer Preis, der seit 1945 jährlich an Theaterschauspieler in New York City vergeben wird.

Geschichte

Der Preis wurde 1945 erstmals verliehen. Viele Theatherschauspieler haben den Preis in der Vergangenheit erhalten, unter anderem Julie Andrews, Phyllis Hyman, Lea Salonga, Carol Channing, Barbara Cook, Tim Daly, Loren Dean, Calista Flockhart, Glenne Headly, Ernestine Jackson, Grace Kelly, Cloris Leachman, Carol Lynley, Lizbeth MacKay, Jayne Mansfield, Audra McDonald, Helen Mirren, Brenda Blethyn, Gillian Anderson, Patricia Neal, Brooke Shields, Maureen Stapleton, Meryl Streep, Bernadette Peters, Vanessa L. Wahlverfahren

Die Sieger werden von einem Komitee New Yorker Theaterkritiker ausgewählt. Gegenwärtig (2009) besteht das Komitee aus Peter Filichia (Theatermania.com), Harry Haun (Playbill), Matthew Murray (TakinBroadway.com), Frank Scheck (New York Post), Michael Sommers (Newhouse Papers), Doug Watt (New York Daily News) und Linda Winer (New York Newsday). Die Koordination erfolgt durch John Willis von TheatreWorld und Ben Hodges.

Statuette

Der Preis besteht aus einer Bronzeskulptur, die von den Künstler Harry Marinsky erschaffen wurde. Die Skulptur ist unter dem Namen „Ianus“ bekannt, einem römischen Gott.
