Die European Synchrotron Radiation Facility (ESRF) betreibt eines der drei größten eigens für die Forschung mit Synchrotronstrahlung gebauten Synchrotrone weltweit, und das größte in Europa. Der Umfang der Anlage beträgt 844 m.

Die ESRF hat ihren Sitz in Grenoble (Frankreich) auf einem gemeinsamen Gelände mit dem Institut Laue-Langevin (ILL). Sie beschäftigt 600 Mitarbeiter und ermöglicht jährlich ca. 3.500 Wissenschaftlern Forschungen an den 49 Beamlines.[1] Sie wird von einem Konsortium aus 18 europäischen Ländern finanziert.

Geschichte

Die ersten Planungen zum Bau des ESRF erfolgten in den 70er Jahren. Im Oktober 1984 schlugen Deutschland und Frankreich gemeinsam das Projekt vor, weitere Länder schlossen sich in den folgenden Jahren dem Projekt an. Baubeginn war am 1. Januar 1988. Am 17. Februar 1992 wurden erstmalig Elektronen in den Speicherring injiziert und im Juni 1992 erstmalig der geplante Strahlstrom von 100 mA erreicht. Die offizielle Einweihung erfolgte am 30. September 1994.[2]
