Gitega (früher Kitega) ist die zweitgrößte Stadt im ostafrikanischen Staat Burundi und Hauptstadt der Provinz Gitega, eine von siebzehn Provinzen des Landes. Gitega war die Hauptstadt (Königsstadt) des einstigen Königreiches Burundi, dem Vorgänger der heutigen Republik Burundi.

Gitega hatte 2007 eine Bevölkerung von etwa 23.000 Einwohnern.[1] Die Stadt liegt etwa 60 km östlich der Hauptstadt Bujumbura in einer Höhe von 1.725 m am Fluss Luvironza, einem der Quellflüsse des Nil. Bis zum Ausbruch der ethnischen Konflikte im Jahr 1972 war Gitega Residenzstadt der Könige der Batusi (Tutsi).

Gitega liegt im Zentrum Burundis, ist ein wichtiges Handelszentrum des Landes und ein bedeutender Straßenknotenpunkt. In Gitega findet sich das Burundi National Museum.

Gitega ist außerdem Sitz eines katholischen Erzbistums, welches eine Partnerschaft mit dem deutschen Bistum Eichstätt hat.
