Die Keystone Cops 1914

Die Keystone Cops waren eine Schauspielertruppe, die gemeinsam zwischen 1912 und 1917 in mehreren Stummfilmkomödien spielte.

Sie sind ein bekannter Teil vieler Slapstick-Komödien, ein Haufen chaotischer, unfähiger Polizisten, die oft in hektischen Verfolgungsjagden einem Verdächtigen nachstellen. Die "Keystone Cops", die sich hauptsächlich aus ehemaligen Zirkusclowns und Preisboxern zusammensetzten, gehörten zum eisernen Bestand der Filme, welche die "Keystone Comedy Film Company" in jenen Jahren zu Dutzenden herstellte.

Die Idee zu dieser komischen Truppe hatte Hank Mann, der zuerst auch als Chief Tehiezel mitspielte. Weitere Mitglieder waren zunächst George Jeske, Bobby Dunn, Mack Riley, Charles Avery, Slim Summerville und Edgar Kennedy. Ihr erster Film war Hoffmeyer's Legacy (1912).

Die Filme wurden von Mack Sennett produziert. Die Besetzung wechselte später, und viele bekannte Komiker begannen in dieser Truppe. Dazu zählen Charlie Chaplin, Fatty Arbuckle, Al St. John, Ben Turpin, Harry Langdon, Ford Sterling, Chester Conklin und viele mehr.

Die Filme hatten großen Einfluss auf die nachfolgenden Slapstick-Filme, in denen das Thema immer wieder variiert wurde.
