Das Vessel Traffic Service (VTS) ist ein verbreitetes elektronisches Überwachungssystem, mit dem der Schiffsverkehr auf See kontrolliert und teilweise auch gelenkt wird. Dies geschieht häufig in Bereichen, wo ein Verkehrstrennungsgebiet etabliert wurde, zum Beispiel in der Deutschen Bucht oder im Englischen Kanal.

VTS wird von Seehäfen oder Verkehrsbehörden betrieben und ist mit der Flugsicherung in der Luftfahrt vergleichbar. Es besteht technisch im Wesentlichen aus Radarüberwachung, Videoüberwachungsanlage, UKW-Funk und dem Automatic Identification System sowie Computern. Es dient sowohl der Navigation als auch dem reibungslosen Ablauf der Schifffahrt.

VTS gewährleistet dies durch

  • Sammeln von Daten
  • Auswertung (Evaluation)
  • Weitergabe der Daten

Jedes VTS muss auf den Vorschriften der IMO basieren; derzeit gilt IMO A. 857(20), bis 1997 IMO A. 578(14). Eher selten wird das VTS auch in Binnengewässern angewendet.
